Fashion as Activism: the exhibition in Lisbon contextualises the intellectual positions of Vivienne Westwood and uses clothes to tell her story.
From June 7 to October 12, 2025, MUDE – Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon presents Vivienne Westwood: The Tigress’ Leap. Curated by fashion historian Anabela Becho, the exhibition takes inspiration from Walter Benjamin’s concept of the “Tiger’s Leap” to explore how the “Grandmother of Punk” reinvented history to define her aesthetic and political identity.
Featuring around 50 pieces – garments, accessories, illustrations, photographs, and books – from MUDE’s Francisco Capelo Collection and other loans, the exhibition spans from the 18th to the 21st century. It highlights Westwood’s subversive use of historical references and British traditions such as corsets, crinolines, tartan, and tweed, while also foregrounding her lifelong activism against consumerism, climate change, and injustice.
More than a retrospective, The Tigress’ Leap is a manifesto: Westwood wielded fashion as rebellion, turning creativity into a radical act of resistance and cultural transformation.
